ASDA to build on green savings with new sustainable supply chain scheme

ASDA the British super market chain is working towards an expansion of their supplier sustainability scheme after it’s successfully saved the company £13m over the last 10 months.

The retailer and its supply chain have worked in conjunction with a Sustain and Save Exchange programme to create innovations in their energy, waste and water efficiency to improve the supply chains sustainability.

The project covers over 300 suppliers that ASDA work with, suppliers including the likes of Youngs Seafood, Warburtons and Cranswick, famous for working with Levi Roots and his Reggae Reggae sauce, they will now assemble a think tank to combat a broad selection of sustainability issues. They will look in the direction of solar power installations and waste segregation to target these issues.

ASDA’s Food Trading Director, Barry Williams, speaks on looking to construct a ‘’world class supply base’’ for ASDA’s long term future. He went on to state ‘’We want to work together with our supplier partners so we can learn from each other to increase our efficiencies and resilience to the growing challenges of resource scarcity’’.

ASDA have also claimed that they have saved a total of 80m since 2005 by reducing their impact on the environment, which they plan to increase to 800m by 2020.

Since last year ASDA have cut their carbon emissions by 4.3% which totals to 17.7% since 2005 exceeding their set target of 10% by 2015. They’ve also improved the companies waste and transport efficiencies with all of their food waste now being recycled and with a 40% decrease in emissions from the company’s heavy goods fleet.

Responsible Solutions can help you emulate ASDA and work alongside you to make your company more eco-friendly, so don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.

British Gypsum BES 6001

Responsible Solutions have worked alongside British Gypsum to help them acquire the BES 6001 ‘very good’ rating from BRE.

BES6001 was developed by BRE (Building Research Establishment). It allows construction companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing. By achieving the BES 6001 ‘very good’ rating, British Gypsum became the first UK gypsum based plastering & dry lining manufacturer to achieve the BES 6001 accreditation for a range of its products.

To achieve the BES 6001 ‘very good’ rating British Gypsum had to undertake a 4 year review of its suppliers and the supply chain. It also included the implementation of a responsible sourcing framework strategy which set & reviewed objectives and targets for them. British Gypsum is required to put in place quality & supplier management to establish policies & objective for all environmental issues.

British Gypsum should be very proud to achieve such accreditation. It’s also the first UK gypsum-based plastering company to gain a BES 6001 rating for a core range of its products. It shows their commitment to sustainability, which has become a more important consideration for construction companies. We would like to congratulate British Gypsum on achieving the certification for a range of their products.

The school was founded by Skanska with assistance from Kier, Lend Lease, Morgan Sindall, Wilmott Dixon, Sir Robert McAlpine and Lend Lease, and features input from Aggregate Industries. The companies are working in collaboration with CITB (The Construction Industry Training Board) – Construction skills who have provided funding for the project until August 2013.

Responsible Solutions have created virtual learning modules for the issue areas: Water, Waste, Climate Change, Sustainable Materials, Environmental Management, and Sustainable Construction. The Virtual learning technology enables users to access the topics through their PC’s, laptops, phones and iPads, meaning it is a valuable tool in helping people access the learning materials created.

Aggregate Industries’ head of sustainability, Shamir Ghumra, said the school would help suppliers address the issues of their contractors: “One client might ask us about BREEAM, another about our carbon footprint. We’re left asking, ‘where do we go for information?’ By opening [the school] out to such a broad Church, we can get a much better idea of what our clients want. It’s much more holistic”.

Training workshops begin in September so don’t miss out, you can register online or book a place on the supply chain info days at:

From South Africa to Singapore and from Brazil to Australia, green buildings are put under the spotlight, green policy is debated and best practice is recognised.

Virtual Environment Manager

Working with you for a cleaner corporate conscience

VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT MANAGER

So, you have managed to obtain your ISO14001 approval, and you are hopefully enjoying some of the extra business that you can now quote for. With a bit of luck you have also achieved some cost savings along the way.

So, time to rest on your laurels? Of course you do have to maintain your approval, and you should really use that as a means of saving even more costs as you continue to improve your environmental performance.

The problem is allocating the time to keeping all your systems up to date and auditing them. Just in case you have forgotten the size of the task, there is a reminder on the back page.

If you find all that just a bit intimidating, don’t worry. You can join the growing list of companies taking advantage of our Virtual Environment Manager service.

Our Virtual Environment Manager service gives you

All the reviews and updates that your system needs

Expert knowledge

Constantly fully up to date

Peace of mind that your processes are compliant

On-site support during ISO assessments

Guaranteed approval at ISO assessments

Saving you time on maintaining your system

Further cost saving opportunities

For a fixed monthly fee

This is what maintaining your Environmental Management System involves:

Demonstrate continual improvement in your environmental management

Ensure that the Environmental Policy continues to be communicated to all staff

Review all activities where you can be expected to influence your environmental performance

Take account of the environmental impact of any changes to processes or products

Incorporate any new legislation (including any case law rulings) into your Environmental Management System

Document improvements and updates to your manuals

Document improvements and updates to your processes

Review performance against your Environmental goals and targets

Demonstrate you have reviewed and assessed the behaviour of any contractors used

Review training provision and training needs

Review your emergency procedures

Regularly test your emergency procedures

Record and report on all non-conformance

Regularly audit your procedures in line with their environmental importance

Ensure that top management regularly conducts an environmental review

Full Virtual Environment Manager service

FREE Responsible Sourcing Webinars!

Do you want to win more work?

In the current business climate we’d all like to win more work but in such a competitive market this can often be difficult to achieve – especially when everyone is offering similar services. There are ways, however, in which you can get a step ahead of your competitors by proving your environmental credentials and improving your business image.

Responsible Sourcing is a growing concern for businesses in the UK, with the UK Contractors Group increasing their target for the use of sustainability sourced materials to 70% by 2015. Do you know enough about Responsible Sourcing to be able to win business by meeting this increased target? We do, and so do the companies we’re currently helping to gain BES6001 standards and to train their staff in understanding what Responsible Sourcing means for their business.

At Responsible Solutions we understand that you might not know all you need to in order to make Responsible Sourcing a major differentiator for your business, and that’s why we’d like to invite you to attend a free online seminar detailing what it means and how it might affect you.

Places are limited and will be issued on a first come first served basis.
