Ian Nicholson, Managing Director

Prior to establishing Responsible Solutions, Ian gained over 20 years’ experience as a Business Improvement Professional within the construction industry, working in a variety of different construction sectors and roles, including contractors, consultants, and latterly within a client organisation.

Ian's experience includes major building, road and water sectors and, throughout his career, has been both involved in and led a number of significant business process improvement projects.

In recent years, Ian has gained significant experience on the implementation and maintenance of quality and environmental management systems; development and delivery of training programs at both corporate and under-graduate levels; and application of sustainable development principles within business practices.

Over the last four years, a significant amount of Ian's work has focused on raising awareness of environmental issues within contracting organisations, central features of which have been awareness of waste management legislation; development of environmental management systems; provision of practical resource efficiency advice through Resource Efficiency Clubs; and provision of in-house training courses.

Additionally, Ian has managed a number of research projects. These include the development of leading edge assessment tools for measuring environmental sustainability including Ecological Footprinting; CEEQUAL (the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Awards Scheme) where he was part of a team led by the Institution of Civil Engineers; and two research projects for Envirowise focusing on packaging waste in the construction sector.

CEEQUAL is a continuing focus for Ian's work where he fulfills the role of Technical Manager.

Outside Responsible Solutions, Ian is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers Environment and Sustainability Board and a governor of Loughborough College.

Joanne Beverley

Jo joined Responsible Solutions as an enthusiastic environmental practitioner who is passionate about improving the sustainability of the construction industry.

Her experience has been predominantly with principal contractors within the construction industry and before joining Responsible Solutions Ltd she worked within a large national construction firm in their Health, Safety and Environmental Department, supporting the team with any environmental issues and developing a draft environmental management system.

At Responsible Solutions, her work focuses on assisting individual organisations in improving their environmental performance and sustainability. The work is split between government funded research and support work, and working with private clients on their internal projects. She is currently Project Managing the East-Midlands Construction Resource Efficiency Club; assisting with the Envirowise funded Construction Packaging Research project; and working with a regional construction contractor in the development of their Environmental Management System.

During her career to date Jo has undertaken voluntary work for Groundwork, assisting school teachers in Derbyshire in educating their pupils about waste, and developing support material. During her MSc, Jo worked with a pharmaceutical packaging company undertaking a life-cycle analysis within the aim of reducing their overall waste production and the quantity of waste produced by the packaging on their products.

In addition to her work with Responsible Solutions, Jo is keen to promote sustainability practices outside the commercial environment and within local communities. She is hopeful about being involved with BTCV’s voluntary scheme in Community Environmental Champions which should commence in early 2007.
